GUANAJUATO


The state capital of Guanajuato has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is a charming colonial city located in a picturesque valley surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra de Guanajuato. His nickname, "place of frogs" is that for the first inhabitants of the city, the shape of its mountainous terrain was similar to that of a frog. This region is known as the Bajio, or the heart of Mexico.

Founded in 1559, Guanajuato is an ancient city home to the La Valenciana mine. Silver was first discovered in Guanajuato mid-seventeenth century. The Valencia was explored a century later and quickly became one of the richest and most productive mines in the world. The Temple of San Cayetano, located on one side of the site, was erected as a monument to wealth and lessons riches of the mine.

The historic center of Guanajuato has a distinctive European flavor, with hundreds of stone-paved alleys going up and down the slope. The tree-lined squares are filled with outdoor cafes, museums, theaters, markets and historical monuments. The buildings of the city are an excellent example of colonial architecture of neoclassical and baroque style. A network of underground tunnels running beneath the city to help control the flow of traffic.

Known as the cradle of the Independence of Mexico, this city is an important stop along the Route of Independence, which also passes through Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende. Walk the Alhóndiga, a building and historical monument located in the center of the city, and the site where the first great victory over the Spaniards took place in 1810.

Guanajuato is a city of legends and legendary places. One of the best known is the famous Callejon del Beso, such a narrow place where couples can kiss each other from opposite balconies. We can not stop participating in a callejoneada, or serenade walk, led by student musicians who, accompanied by guitars, serenade those present and tell local stories.

The city hosts an annual International Cervantino Festival, an event performing arts named after Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the author of Don Quixote. We also find a museum dedicated to Quijote, statues of him and his faithful squire Sancho Panza in the Plaza Allende, just outside the Teatro Cervantes.

You can see the house of the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, born in this state, which has been converted into an excellent museum. The city is also home to a large population of students, many of whom attend the University of Guanajuato, one of the oldest state universities.

Guanajuato is an ideal place to sample regional cuisine Bajio place. Among the favorite local dishes are mining enchiladas (tortillas stuffed with meat, beans or cheese and topped with a sauce of guajillo and ancho chile) and guanajuatenses pacholas (ground beef with spices). You can also enjoy incredible views from the heights of the city and surrounding mountains and valleys of the state of Guanajuato while you slip on a hang glider or traveling aboard the basket of a hot air balloon. You need to bring a sweater as the weather in Guanajuato is very pleasant throughout the year, but the nights can be chilly.
